On March 12, 1930, Mahatma Gandhi began a march to the sea, his boldest act yet of civil disobedience against British rule in India. The leader of India's nationalist movement defied a British law by manufacturing salt and was soon jailed - the typical scenario that continued for 2 more decades. As millions of Muslims came to join Hindus in opposing his jailing, his intention of advancing peace and unification between India's Hindu and Muslim sects was realized. Though outbreaks of civil unrest and violence were at times unavoidable, Gandhi's non-violent methods eventually brought about his goal of Indian independence before a Hindu extremist's bullet ended his life at the age of 78.
